The South Wedge Neighborhood

The South Wedge is a fresh yet familial, eclectic, creatively evolving neighborhood that's a vibrant mix of young professionals, progressives, and working class households.  Bisected by bustling South Avenue and its mix of shops, eateries, coffee houses, and services, the Wedge offers housing options ranging from pre-Civil War cottage-style homes to condos in a renovated school buildings. From the Wedge you can easily access downtown and the Genesee River; within the neighborhood you can take in an intimate concert at the German House; sample one of hundreds of beers at the Tap and Mallet; schmooze with neighbors at Boulder Coffee, Equal Grounds, orthe Women's Coffee Connection; indulge in a cheesecake at Cheesy Eddie's or vegan goodies at Eco Bella Bakery. At the South Wedge Farmers Market you can buy local and organic to your heart's content and catch up with the neighbors.  The neighborhood also features a staffed neighborhood organization, the South Wedge Planning Committee, and a creative, active business association. Public art abounds. 

Historically, the South Wedge has been a working class area and remains so today. It is one of Rochester's longstanding neighborhoods, home to two preservation districts and some of the oldest houses in the city. Even today, many residents of the Wedge can trace their families' arrival in the neighborhood to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
